In February 2020 some members of FASYG will be undertaking a Drakensberg adventure using Injishuthi as a base. GPX routes, maps and profiles can be found here.
The plan is to start at the KZN Wildlife offices at Monk’s Cowl on Friday late afternoon – early evening. The team will then run to Blind Man’s Corner via Verkykerskop. From Blind Man’s corner the plan is to head south to south-west along the contour path to Shada Ridge and onto van Heyningen’s Pass with a final descent to the Injisuthi Rest Camp.
A pre-dawn start is planned for Saturday morning – leaving the Injishuthi camp and proceeding south and south east along the Injasuti river towards the Battle Cave rock art site. From there the team will proceed to Centenary Hut and up Corner Pass to The Judge Peak at 3197m above sea level. This will be followed by a visit to Poppel Peak at 3331m. From Popple Peak the route proceeds along the escarpment to the first potential “escape” or turn-around point at the Bannerman Pass. The intention is to proceed beyond the pass to Sanqebethu Peak at 3301m and then across the top of the Bannerman Face to a second potential “escape” or turn-around point at Thumb Pass. If all goes well the team will bypass Thumb Pass and proceed to Langalibalele Pass and then descend the pass alongside the Bushman’s River to the contour path. The route will then turn north heading back to Injishuthi via the contour path, passing Bannerman and Centenary huts. The last section of the route is the reverse of the first section of the route.
